This research is developing harmonised tests to be used in the European Approval Scheme for Construction Products in contact with Drinking Water.
Fifteen European laboratories are involved in the work programme which has four work packages (WP1 - microbial growth; WP2 - cytotoxicity; WP3 - non-target compounds by gas chromatography mass spectometry (GCMS); WP4 - disinfection by-products).
The research is sponsored by the European Community's (EC) 5th Framework Research Programme and Regulators in the supporting countries. The project's Scientific Coordinator is from the Commissions' Joint Research Centre at Ispra, Italy and the laboratories involved are:

This research will provide the basis for a European Approvals Scheme, so once a manufacturer gets approval for a particular product under this scheme, their product will automatically be approved across the European Union.
