CP047  PhD Research Innovation
WRc and Imperial College collaborated in this postgraduate training scheme for high quality, industry related PhD research. Post graduate students were given a unique opportunity of an academic programme with business training in a research environment. This Partnership was funded by the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and WRc.

Examples of projects include (listed under business categories):

  • Reducing Risk

    • Behaviour of water distribution pipelines in earthquake zones (with additional sponsorship from an international corporation)
    • Strategies to improve risk assessments of the impact of ammonical-nitrogen from landfill leachate on groundwater (with additional sponsorship from a waste management contractor)

  • Improving Efficiency & Reducing Costs

    • The enhancement of particle removal in water treatment by pre-oxidation (with additional sponsorship from 3 water utilities)

  • Best Practice

    • Development of speciation based environmental quality standards
    • Human exposure to manganese; speciation and potential toxicity

  • Process Optimisation

    • The biodiversity of soils contaminated with heavy metals (with additional sponsorship from 4 water utilities)
    • Development of mode of action toxicity biosensors for the wastewater industry
    • Sulphate disinfection, stabilisation and heavy metal removal from sewage sludge

  • Strategic Planning

    • ¬∑Elements of an integrated model for tackling leakage and bursts in water distribution pipelines (with additional sponsorship from a water utility)
    • A mathematical modelling approach to the design of reliable water distribution networks

  • Meeting Legislation

    • In-situ bioremediation of nitrate contaminated groundwater (with additional sponsorship from a water utility)
