CP451  Rising Mains: To Replace or to Renovate? Sewerage
Project Appreciation and Objectives

Rising mains have the highest failure rate per unit length of any type of water industry pipeline asset. Rising mains failures always cause loss of service and can result in pollution of receiving waters or sewer flooding.

AMP5 is seeing many Water and Sewerage Companies (WaSCs) focussing on the structural conditon of their rising mains. In many cases where remediation is required it is critical to maintain service while remediation is in progress. As such, the rising main cannot be closed down and trenchless techniques such as replacement (e.g. pipe bursting) or renovation (e.g. liing with cured-in-place pipes) are not usually considered. Conventional trenching is usually used to replace the existing main.

Recent developments in-lining techniques have greatly increased their installation productivity and the duration that a rising main would need to be out of service is decreasing. These innovative techniques are therefore becoming a more attractive and potentiallya much cheaper option than conventional techniques.

The objectives of this project are to:

  • Identify the specific factors which influence the decision on whether to replace or renovate;
  • Identify performance/mechanical/type test requirements that pipe linings would need to meet;
  • Investigate currently available (or close to the market) lining systems;
  • Inform participants on the remediation optons available for rising mains;
  • Develop a technique selection tool.

Benefits to Clients

  • The project will inform WASCs on whether rising main liing products at (or close to) market are "fit-for-purpose".
  • Determine which replacement/rehabilitation options are appropirate for particular site conditions.
  • An independent forum to develop the requirements for rising main lining, which will result in a level playing field for all.

Work Programme

  1. Collate the factors which determine the choice of technique.
  2. Determine the required pipe/lining performance.
  3. Identify which techniques are currently available and collate information/data regarding those techniques.
  4. Site trials to audit their performance.
  5. Developa technique selection tool.

Project Output

  • A reference document on the available renovation systems and their suitability for application rising mains.
  • A technique selection (MX Excel spreadsheet) tool.
  • A dissemination workshop.
