CP045  Sustainable Recycling of Sludge Biosolids Sludge/Biosolids
This project undertaken by WRc for a group of water utilities, addressed key issues needed to underpin sustainable sludge biosolids recycling.

These included:

  • Quality standards and quality assurance for sludge biosolids products going to land to improve confidence, to secure existing operations and to open up new markets. Standards have to be set in relation to treatment processes, numbers of pathogens, content of nutrients, PTEs and organic contaminants. A protocol has been devised and tested, which includes critical point analysis, for monitoring compliance with standards and demonstrating quality assurance in biosolids products and landspreading operations.
  • Environmental assessment of biosolids management options to strengthen the case for biosolids recycling to land. This includes the minimal impact on human and environmental health with comparative risk assessment on other sludge management options and agricultural practices.
