CP043  Pathogens in Biosolids/Sludge Sludge/Biosolids
This project has provided an environmental assessment of outlets for biosolids. Whilst sludge product quality and treatment technology has moved forward apace, there remains a need to quantify the implications of new developments on environmental impact assessment including life cycle analysis (LCA) to demonstrate sustainability.

Sponsored by the UK Water Industry Research and undertaken by WRc this project has provided an objective basis for all interested parties (producers, regulators, other stakeholders, the media and the public) to better understand the pros and cons of particular sludge strategies. The assessment study will assist with strategy development and will provide an independent and transparent basis for all parties to understand the merits of new and existing sludge management operations.

There is an appraisal of the outlets with the emphasis on environmental benefits and disbenefits including consideration of legislation, feasibility, the situation in EU countries and world-wide, and economic aspects. The programme also includes an in-depth study of selected biosolids management options.
