Background and Objective
Treatment to reduce plumbosolvency to meet the permitted concentrations for lead in drinking water generally consists of phosphate dosing, usually as orthphosphoricnacid, sodium orthophosphate or monosodium phosphate. While this approach is generally effective, the cost of cehmicals has approximately doubled of late abd there is concern over security of supply. A literature review carried out by WRc identified stannous chloride as a possible practical and economic alternative to orthophosphate.
In this study, practical laboratory trials were carried out to confirm the performance of stannous chloride for plumbosolvency control under UK conditions on a range of water types. A market survey and environmental impact assessment was carried out in parallel to the laboratory trials.
