CP189  High Rate Clarification Water Treatment
A range of proprietary high rate clarification processes were available each with claimed benefits relating to small or very small footprint and capital cost. The water treatment process included enhanced flotation (AquaDAF®, COCODAFF®, DAT Rapide®) and enhanced sedimentation (Actiflo®). Enhanced sedimentation processes use polyacrylamide, which was subject to tighter Regulation in the future.

Relatively small numbers of each have been installed in the UK for new treatment, works expansion and retrofits. The process differ in: OPEX and CAPEX profile; suitability in relation to raw water quality; relationship between loading and output quality plus other features. Those responsible for procuring new treatment were faced with an array of options and needed clear, independent, detailed guidance to support decision making.

Benefits to Clients

The project provided an independent analysis of proprietary high rate clarification to:

  • Assist in the selection of processes for specific applications (eg. soft, highly coloured vs. hard, turbid water) that minimised cost while meeting performance requirements
  • Enabled optimisation of existing processes through sharing of operational knowledge and identification of operational benchmarks
  • Ensure that new Regulatory standards are met.
